As we walked out of Wembley Stadium on that beautiful bank holiday afternoon, Alfie had spotted a blue & white beach ball that was rolling about amongst the rows of seats that by now were emptying pretty quickly. Like most kids do I suppose, he was after it like the proverbial rat up a drainpipe and he was claiming it. Delighted with his ‘find’, Alfie was beaming even more now and to be honest I didn’t care. We’d drifted into six minutes of injury time, but still we kept on pouring forward desperately searching for that one equalising goal that would take us into extra time. By this time Aden Flint had been brought on as a sub and was playing up front alongside Michael Smith to give us some extra height. Into the 97th minute of the game and the ball was cleared away and out of play by the Peterborough defence and the ball sailed deep into the crowd in the North Stand. The fans hurled the ball back on to the pitch and up stepped Will Vaulks and, as he furiously wiped the ball repeatedly to try and get some extra purchase on the ball, this was it. We’d arrived at the ’Last Chance Saloon’, our horses were tethered up outside and this was it, it was our moment of destiny.

Peter Holmes is a publisher who produces three lifestyle magazines (two in Barnsley & one in Sheffield) from his home in Hoyland. Peter and his son Alfie are North Stand season ticket holders and are both regular home & away supporters of the Owls. Now in his ‘senior years’, as he calls them, Peter always wanted to write a book and the story of their many journeys around the country following the Owls during the memorable 2022-23 season provided the perfect opportunity for him to do this. The roller coaster ride that the season was, turned out to be the most enthralling of journeys and one that neither Peter or young Alfie ever expected.
